In Poland’s 2025 presidential election, right-wing candidate Karol Nawrocki secured 50.89% of the vote and defeated Warsaw Mayor Rafal Trzaskowski in a closely contested race. The deeply polarized political climate in Poland became evident through this election. Nawrocki ran as an independent candidate and received support from the ruling Law and Justice (PiS) party and former US President Donald Trump. His victory challenges Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s center-left government, which has worked to strengthen ties with the European Union and pursue democratic reforms. Nawrocki’s win clearly signals that nationalism and skepticism toward the European Union are gaining strength in Poland.
Nawrocki’s election agenda, “Plan 21,” emphasizes education, tax reform, and national security. He aims to strengthen the Polish education system, keep the Polish zloty instead of adopting the euro, and provide tax breaks for families. In addition, he plans to build a strong army of 300,000 soldiers and implement strict measures against illegal immigration. Nawrocki’s victory is set to significantly shift Poland’s political direction, potentially straining relations with the European Union and slowing internal reforms. He will take the oath of office on 6 August 2025, and his policies will soon begin shaping Poland and Europe thereafter.
